Over 70% of the rural population in Guatemala lives in poverty -- especially women. Guatemalan women have the lowest life expectancy and the highest maternal mortality rate in the region, and the worst economic activity rate in Central America. There have little or no opportunity to generate income and are generally unable to earn a living wage. Working with La ComUnidad offers them a chance to use their traditional textile skills to earn a fair wage and improve their lives.
